Why Holly Willoughby’s New Channel Is a Wake-Up Call for Small Business Owners

When Holly Willoughby announced her new YouTube show, Together, the media instantly jumped on the usual angles: the show format, the studio setup, and her return to screen.
To me, they completely missed the point.
Holly is not sitting around waiting for a traditional TV network to hand her a multi-million-pound contract. She took complete control of her own distribution. She built her own studio (I mean, maybe not herself!), brought in her own commercial partners, and decided to publish on her own terms.
We see online creators do this every day. But for someone who was the undisputed darling of mainstream daytime television to step away from the traditional broadcast model? That is monumental. It signals a massive shift in how media, authority, and broadcasting actually work.
There are no gatekeepers. No permission needed.
When you run your own small business, it is far too easy to fall into the the trap of waiting for someone else to give you the green light.
If you are currently holding back on a launch, a campaign, or a new idea, here are four lessons from Holly’s big move, and what it means for your own business.
1. Stop Waiting for Permission
So many brilliant, highly skilled business owners spend years stuck in a holding pattern.
They tell themselves they are:
-
Waiting for the ‘right time’ to launch.
-
Waiting until their offer, website, or product is 100% perfect.
-
Waiting for a publisher, a producer, or a grand industry invitation to crown them as an expert before stepping into the spotlight.
The reality? Nobody is coming to hand you a golden ticket.
You do not need a publisher, a producer, or a seal of approval from a corporate authority to start sharing your expertise. The platforms are already sitting right there on your phone, waiting for you to use them.
2. The Platforms Are Free, Use Them
You do not need a massive production budget or an agency behind you to reach your ideal clients.
The barrier to entry has completely vanished. You have access to tools that allow you to broadcast directly to your target audience every single day:
-
YouTube and Podcasts: Ideal for long-form, authority-building content where you can dive deep into your subject.
-
Email Newsletters: The single best way to build a direct, uninterrupted connection with people who actually want to hear from you.
-
Social Media: Perfect for quick daily engagement, sharing behind-the-scenes moments, and answering real questions.
When you realise that you already have the tools to build a loyal, paying community, waiting around for someone else’s approval makes no sense at all.
3. Lean on Your Network
Growth rarely happens in a vacuum. Holly did not try to do everything by herself in a dark room; she brought in a team, secured partners, and leveraged her connections.
Look around at your current network right now:
-
Who can you collaborate with on a joint project or giveaway?
-
Who can you interview for your blog or newsletter?
-
Which complementary business owners share your values and serve the exact same audience?
Teaming up with aligned business owners allows you to share audiences, cross-promote, and grow faster.
4. Choose Formats Your Audience Actually Wants
Holly chose a talk show and lifestyle format because she excels at it, and it is precisely what her audience loves to watch.
Do not overcomplicate your content strategy. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel or copy whatever trend is going viral on social media this week.
Look closely at what your clients ask you for every single day. What are the common struggles, questions, and pain points that keep them up at night? Build simple, helpful content directly around those exact topics.
Take Control of Your Own Business Today
I am not saying you should never strive to work with mainstream media or traditional partners if that is what you want. And I say that as someone who’s had books published with Bloomsbury and been on mainstream TV. Both are lovely, genuinely.
What I am saying is that you do not have to wait for that break to happen. You can make it yourself. And, I did this too. My first book? Couldn’t get a publisher so I self published…
When you control every aspect of what you are doing, you pick who you work with, you decide on the content, and you reap the commercial benefits directly.
Bottom line: you hold the power.
