Skincare, outdoor skin, and sustainability with Barker & Sloane

Barker & Sloane

Have you heard of Barker & Sloane? This stunningly beautiful skincare brand, founded by Claire Barker, launched at The Game Fair last year and literally flew off the shelves. Combining sustainability credentials with high quality formulations to support outdoor skin, it’s hardly surprising that this brand continues to go from strength to strength. You’ll notice the names are more than a little brilliant too, and firmly connect the brand to its target market.

Skincare, outdoor skin, and sustainability with Barker & Sloane

The initial idea came from the want to make the precious honey produced by Claire’s bees go further, and that has led to Barker & Sloane and even more.

Of course, no business journey goes without a hitch, and Claire openly talks about the lows that her business has faced along the way including a name change, delays in getting products approved, and missing the Christmas trade last year. But don’t worry, there’s a LOT of highs too. And this is all for a business that’s just 18 months old.

This is a seriously inspirational episode; I know you’re going to love it.

I’ve been named as one of Britain’s Top 50 Business Advisers!

Top 50 Business Advisers

Well, this is an exciting, one, isn’t it?!

I’ve been named as one of Britain’s Top 50 Business Advisers!

Just a few short weeks ago, I was named as one of Britain’s Top 50 Business Advisers. I was picked from hundreds of advisers from around the UK for my work.

Having spent many years working in and with small businesses (over ten years as a PR and social media consultant!), over the last five years, I have moved into a coaching and mentoring role, helping small businesses to grow and develop further. In addition, I guest lecture at three universities, am Facebook Blueprint Certified, and I’m also a #shemeansbusiness accredited trainer, which is a nationwide programme empowering women to improve their digital skills and embrace social media.

I will now go through to the public vote to find the UK’s Top Ten Advisers.

The Top 50 Adviser Awards are run by small business network Enterprise Nation, the UK’s leading support network for small businesses – in association with Xero, Dell Technologies and Neat. The list was compiled after the awards reached out to fledgling businesses to nominate an adviser that had helped them to build and grow a sustainable business.

The awards, which set out to highlight the work done behind the scenes by experts helping Britain’s army of small businesses to build and grow, revealed a rich vein of dedicated supporters for the UK’s expanding entrepreneurial culture, even during the pandemic.

Emma Jones, founder of Enterprise Nation said: “Business advisers are the unsung heroes behind Britain’s booming small business culture and their insight and experience are needed now more than ever.

“The awards have uncovered some incredible work that has helped firms take steps towards sustainability and growth or managing the current situation by pivoting and by taking a strategic look at their business.

“Research shows that those firms that take advice do better than those that don’t – and it stands to reason that good advice can help avoid some of the damaging, early mistakes entrepreneurs can make that can often force them to give up.

“The awards were designed to show how important this work is in action, in order to help more start-ups and small firms find out about the benefits of taking advice.”

The 50 advisers were chosen from hundreds of entries from around the UK, with ten outstanding experts picked out as the top ten.

It’s such a huge honour to have made it into the Top 50 across the UK. For someone who works in such a niche industry, it feels particularly special.

If you’d like to vote for me (and I would be really grateful if you did! The link is here. Votes close at midnight on 18th November 2020.

7 ways to support small businesses this festive season

support small businesses this festive season

Supporting the small businesses you love has never been more important – and in this podcast I share seven ways that everyone can help support the businesses this festive season, without it costing them a penny.

7 ways to support small businesses this festive season

Everyone’s financial situations are different, but a common theme I see online all the time is people’s desire to help and support small businesses. So I wanted to do my bit to help. Because while buying gifts from the businesses you love this year will obviously help them (I mention this too), there are lots of things you can to help that don’t cost any money at all. By utilising the skills, the following, and simply your ability to engage and communicate, you can help people’s content get in front of more people, find new fans, and your kind words could well help to lift someone up who’s having a tricky week too.

And as an added bonus, I’ve thrown in a few extra ideas if you’re a brand ambassador or sponsored person. Because now really is the time to help out the people who support you.
